The Convergent Science Network of biomimetic and biohybrid systems (CSN) is a coordination action (CA) for the development of future real-world technologies, supported by the European Commission under the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program (ICT, FP7). CSN organizes this school to provide a wide spectrum overview on experimental tools available to investigate brain functions. Particular emphasis is given on methods suitable to explore neuronal signals and their processing in neuronal networks and in the brain which is considered as a fundamental step towards the development of brain-inspired artificial systems and brain-machine interfaces.
The school targets doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, scientists working in the related fields. Since the school's topics are interdisciplinary covering neurobiology, neuronal biophysics, microscopy, and electronics, preliminary knowledge in these fields is highly recommended. read more ...

Hybrid neuroelectronic devices will be the basis for future information technology relying on the plasticity of networks formed by mammalian neurons in culture.
Microelectronic implants interfaced with neurons in the nervous tissue will become sophisticated neuroprostheses able to rescue impairments of the human nervous system.
The neurochip laboratory deals with fundamental aspects of electronic interfacing of microstructured silicon chips to rat neurons, both in culture and “in vivo”. Our focus is the optimization of electrical coupling in both directions, from excited mammalian neurons to transistors and from stimulation areas on the chip to the cells. This is achieved through the use of highly integrated CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) chips and the application of modern cell and molecular biology approaches.
